Just use what you have available and try to use colors that are close. I recommend following the “30 Days to Watercolor” tutorial to help you understand your paint colors.
Invest in good quality paper and one or two nice brushes and you’ll be all set!

I have done watercolors since 2000. I was a Chemistry teacher and had no time to try until retirement. I couldn’t draw back then. But did get better. So far I have learned most importantly tips on sketching . Your explanation as you are sketching is very helpful. I believe I should draw freehand what I am going to paint. Back to my journey. I took Adult Ed water color class for 3 years and continued on my own periodically until 2010. Big gap of time had gone by. So in 2023 I had to relearn color mixing, techniques, sketching , etc. I wasn’t progressing quickly on my own or by following various Utube videos. I saw you on FB 2024 and liked your presentation, fun, no pressure, doable. Emily, I wanted to pick up my brushes and watercolors again and you have made that possible. I love having something to learn everyday. I’ve learned about papers, paints, the SILVER BLACK VELVET #8 brush of magical powers (buy one… well worth it). I have learned I need more practice on water control and that sometimes loose painting style is exactly what is needed. I have also learned if you paint more than a few details in a loose painting with each brush stroke it becomes less and less loose.because that train is harrrd to stop. I’m learning to just go with it. Without Watercolor Mastery I would never have learned the wet in wet technique. I’ve not mastered it yet, but I will. Thank you, Emily.
Watercolor Mastery has so many amazing tutorials. Emily shows you how to sketch the image and makes it so approachable, she also provides many line drawings if you prefer to trace it or struggle with drawing a more challenging tutorial. She provides so many tips and techniques to help you achieve an amazing painting. The tutorials may take you a little longer to complete than she shows, but that is part of the learning process. just hit pause and work at your own pace.
